Secure Access to IRS Services Is Now in Your Pocket
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has launched a new mobile app, simply called IRS, replacing the agency’s longtime IRS2Go app and expanding secure digital services for individual taxpayers. The new app allows individuals to access selected IRS Online Account features directly from their smartphones, including refund tracking, payments, tax records, and notices.
While the app is designed primarily for individual taxpayers, business taxpayers will continue to access Business Tax Account services and other business-related resources through IRS.gov. The new app is part of the IRS’s ongoing effort to make tax information and account management more accessible, secure, and convenient for taxpayers on the go.
What Can Taxpayers Do With the New IRS App?
After securely signing in, taxpayers can access a variety of self-service features, including:
- Check Refund Status: Monitor the status of tax refunds and amended returns without visiting IRS.gov.
- View Account Balances: Review outstanding tax balances and account information.
- Make Tax Payments: Submit payments and review payment history directly through the app.
- Access Tax Records and Transcripts: View and download available tax records, transcripts, and other account documents.
- Read IRS Notices and Letters: Access select IRS correspondence electronically.
- Manage Profile and Communication Preferences: Update certain account settings and communication preferences from your mobile device.
- Retrieve an Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN): Taxpayers enrolled in the IRS Identity Protection PIN program can conveniently access their IP PIN through the app.
How to Get the New IRS App
The IRS app is available free of charge for both Apple and Android devices.

- iPhone and iPad Users: Download the app from the Apple App Store.
- Android Users: Download the app from Google Play.
- Existing IRS2Go Users: If IRS2Go is already installed and automatic updates are enabled, no additional download is required. The app will update automatically through the normal update process.
To access account-specific information, taxpayers must sign in using the same secure credentials they use for their IRS Online Account. Users who already have an account can log in through the app, while those who do not have one can create an account through the IRS authentication process. The app provides secure mobile access to selected Individual Online Account services.

Important Security Reminder
The IRS urges taxpayers to download the app only from verified IRS resources, the Apple App Store, or Google Play. Taxpayers should also be cautious of look-alike apps, unsolicited text messages, emails, or advertisements claiming to provide IRS account access.
The IRS does not request sensitive personal or financial information through unsolicited messages. If you receive a suspicious communication claiming to be from the IRS, do not click any links or provide personal information. Instead, visit IRS.gov directly to verify the information.
The Bottom Line
The new IRS app gives taxpayers a convenient way to access key IRS tools and account information from their mobile devices. Whether you’re checking a refund, making a payment, reviewing tax records, or accessing an Identity Protection PIN, the app provides a secure and centralized way to manage your tax information on the go. As the IRS continues to expand the app’s capabilities, it is expected to become an increasingly valuable resource for taxpayers seeking fast, secure access to their tax accounts.
